Space Technology Is The Only Hope Humans Have To Defend Against Extinction From A Cosmic Threat

Space technology is the only hope humans have to defend against extinction from a cosmic threat. If a giant asteroid were on a collision course toward earth, it could take as long as 20 years to actually execute a plan to change its trajectory or deflect it. If we forget about the fact that this pale blue dot is the only home we have, we are doomed to leave nothing but our monuments on earth, turning it into another graveyard of a civilisation who made the sensible decision that there was no reason to go into space.

How can you help? Write your congressmen and PM and drill them on why they should be supporting expanding the budget of NASA. Even raising NASA's budget to 1% of the national budget would enable many new, ambitious programs that would bring unprecedented economic growth and security to the USA and the planet.

An Asteroid defense solar focusing array to heat up asteroids headed our way and change their trajectory. A few new space telescopes to scan the skies for huge fucking rocks approaching us and listen for other life that may be out there in our neighbourhood. A project to capture asteroids in orbit around earth and mine them for metals and water that can be used in space [something china is already planning to do], the development of new sustainable self-contained habitat technology that could be adapted on earth to improve quality of life and reduce waste in our daily lives, new materials which could be used in all sorts of manufacturing applications.

Space is not a waste of money, space is the greatest untapped resource we're not exploiting. And We should be out there taking advantage of it. Every single time NASA has launched something new or embarked on a new project, they've had to invent new technology, hich then enters the public domain and can be used by private sector companies.

Not even just new technologies. A single 500m Platinum group asteroid could provide literally 2-3 Trillion dollars worth of Platinum, Iridium, palladium, and other extremely rare metals that aren't very common on earth, and they would enable us to cheaply produce more advanced techs that were previously abandoned due to the costs. We could be living in global abundance if only we could take it upon ourselves to invest the capital we have in space instead of sending men and tanks into the desert to play hide and seek with religious fundamentalists.
